  • Acer No. 2 in PC Sales for Q3, Dell Takes a Hit
    12.05.2009

Acer, the Taiwanese PC maker, has overtaken Dell Inc. as second place in PC business for the third quarter of 2009, according to market research firm iSuppli. After 13 unanswered quarters, Hewlett Packard still remains in the number one spot.

Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms research, pointed out the market switch is also a significant achievement for the other part of the computing world. Wilkins stated, "Acer's rise to the No.-2 rank in the global PC business reflects not only its strong performance in the notebook segment, but also the historic rise of Asia as a primary force in the computer industry."

Acer's third-quarter shipments exceeded 10.7 million units, up 16.6 percent from the third quarter of 2008 and up a whopping 31 percent from the previous quarter. Dell decreased from 10.9 million units shipped in the second quarter of 2009 to 10.3 million units shipped in the third quarter. Wilkins stated this decline in Dell sales was due to "continued challenges in the commercial sector."
